Post What do you want in a ZOE fangame?
Just a quick question...

I'm thinking of making a 2D action-packed side shooter with many abilities originally granted by the ZOE series. However, this game will have the ZOEOA mech sprites along with the "REAL" zoe combat system( zero-gravity, instant weapon swap in close range, homing lasers, etc.)

With this 2D game, I can change everything in the engine and add new features and abilities. It will be the perfect Hideo Kojima wannabe with well-animated cutscenes, high-speed combat, and Gradius-style boss battles with lasers being spammed everywhere.


Of course, I need your advice and opinions.

After the ZOEOA project is complete, the 2D game will be started.
In 2 months or less, the full ZOEOA project will be complete(hopefully).


The project will be made with Game Maker 8 Pro(recently purchased).
The high-resolution, high FPS sprites will be rendered in Deep Exploration 5 CAD edition.
The sounds/audio produced in Audacity.


At the moment the project is a bit on the OTP stage, which is why I'm asking you:

*should it be done
*how do you want it done
*what do you want it to have
*to make a wish

yeah it would be good

but we need to be able to play all the mecha of ZOE

you should do the boss of ZOE 1 and 2 for the boss like, Tempest
even maybe all the zoe 1 and 2 mission and battle in 2d
( you can add special character that we need to unlock like Zetus and Marduk
and the other ZOE:OA mecha )

but finish ZOE:OA first, with no bug and others error ^^

That's precisely why I wanted to work with a new engine!

I want my giant bosses back. There was only 1 in ZOE 2, and that really disappointed me. I want giant bosses. Orbital frame bosses are getting boring soon.

Hm, that's actually something I already thought about, however, my idea was to be made on Flash. Of course, it would never see the light of day, since I never got around to learning actionscript and probably never will.

Still, I got some ideas for the controls scheme:
The mouse cursor would serve for aiming, and the left button to attack. WASD for movement (WS for ascending/descending, AD for left and right). Spacebar could be Dash/Burst or even 0-Shift if pressed twice. For Subweapons/Grab Ctrl and E for the Subweapon menu. If it was a frame like Vic Viper, however, it could go into ship mode by pressing E, instead of bringing up the Subweapon menu; pretty much like versus mode on the PS2.

For better aiming, the cursor could have a sort of ZoE-lock-on crosshair, and auto-aim at the enemies under it (with priority to the one nearest Jehuty).


As for features, it would, indeed, be awesome if the game traversed the two original games. Including a versus mode against the CPU and online would also be really cool.

Also, if you intend to add extra, original Frames and whatnot, I'll be glad to draw some concepts for them.

holy shit, im already imaging this

so what i want in a zoe fangame
for starters just use ZOE mechs from all the zoe games
1,2 and fist of mars (since this game has the most enemies) you could get some from there

as for gameplay
combined keyboard and mouse controls (move with mouse, shoot with keyboard etc)

i play lots of doujin games so im acustomed to having the jump,attack etc
at "Z" "X" "A" "S" "D", so it would be easier to move with mouse while shooting with Z for the normal shot

SHITF for burst and dash, space is going to be the BOMB but instead of bomb its going to trigger the zero shift, but instead of moving right next to 1 enemy, i'd be better if it activated slow motion so you can kill any animies you want at a given time (it will also erase all bullets on screen) and its gonna have limited uses to avoid spaming

X for sub weapons, oh as for the subweapons
a bar at the bottom like in gradius would be a nice feature
with 5 sub weapons at bottom like
"javelin, gauntlet, phalanx, comet, halverd" and make these burstable too plz =P

as for the sword, i dunno if you are gonna put it automatically or an extra button to execute it just like that, but its fine with me whatever you go to, as long as it deflects bullets

I don't really understand much about programming, but wouldn't it just require to assign a certain variable for each command and then enable editing the bindings? As in; instead of having the A key for attack, have variable "Atk" for attacking and then a certain key bound to it?

If one knows enough to mess around an engine or even make a completely new one (as I suppose you will for this game), I'd take it you could enable a key binding editor. But then again, like I said, I don't understand much about programming, so it could be much more complex than I imagine it. In fact, I may even be talking complete nonsense and not even notice it :P
