Maybe add more enemy types, sprites, shaders, particle systems...

Swarm-based AI.

Just remember, when a target is being attacked, the other AI must be reduced to lower-level AI to allow the player to battle that one enemy.
If you pay attention to Zone Of The Enders, you'll notice how the raptors share this behavior.

What states and rules should they have?

I observed that they have idle, follow, orbit/strafe l/r
And they do sword attack if close to player, and fire randomly if far away from player.

Should only the targeted AI be allowed to fire?
What do the lower leveled AI do instead? Just sit there?



Have anyone analysed the AI in ZOE, so you can tell me how they should behave?

NOTE:

Develop the WISP/GRAB subweapon.

Grab background elements and they will grant you a new use/power temorarily while you use them as a shield or weapon.

The player can now pick up panels

The player gets knockback when the panel is broken by the AI.
And the panel can be transformed into a burst shot
